How tilt shift photography can be done with photoshop : photoshop tutorial

On June 5, 2012 by Britul

Tilt shift photography is a type of digital photography where a live wide angle scene is given an effect of miniature model with the help of tilt and shift of the lens.

But, it requires perfect setting and fine handling of the camera. These make it difficult for non pro photographers.

But, a normal digital photograph can be given a tilt shift effect with the help of photoshop

Follow the below steps to create tilt shift photography in photoshop

First of all open a picture in photoshop. Remember that the photo must be a wide angle photograph. In tilt shift photography , we just keep the main subject of the picture highly in focus and make the remaining part of the picture blur. This way the whole picture seems to be of a miniature model. Hence the picture must have wide coverage of a scene.

Next important thing is that since miniature models are viewed from top, it is better to select a photo of such a view i.e. picture taken from a height looking towards down.  E.g. pictures of road taken from building rooftop etc.

The next important thing is that never select a photo having the sky in it. We can add water, mountain everything in a model. But, sky is something which cannot be added to a model.

Now, open the photo. We have selected the below shown photo. Now press “q” in the keyboard to go into quick mask mode.tilt shift photography

Now select gradient tool. Pickup the “reflected gradient” from the top bar as shown in the pic.

Now select the area which you wish to be in focus. To select that area, you just need to draw a line. Here in this picture I have drawn a vertical line and perpendicular to that line, an area is elected. The selected area will be automatically colored in red.tilt shift photography

Now exit quick mask mode by pressing “q”. You should see selection line around the non selected areas.

Now go to Filter -> Blur -> Lens Blur. Now play with the sliders on the right till the time you are satisfied with the look. Press “ok”.

Now go to Select -> Deselect. This will remove the selection.

Now go to Image-> Adjutment -> Hue/Saturation and increase the saturation slightly. This is because; Desktop models are kept polished and bright. Your picture should also look the same.

Now save the image. You’re done.

The final image should look like this.tilt shift photography
