facebook can be harmful – for many of us this may seem as an astonishing statement. But actual facts & figure don’t seem to support the innocence of facebook any more.
In recent years, numbers of facebook users have been increasing exponentially. Penetration of facebook in US alone is more than 50% of the population. From number of users, United States stand at the first place having 15,72,33,760 users followed by Brazil with 4,63,39,720 users and India!! with 4,57,74,260 users !!. facebook can be harmful
Other positions within top ten are occupied by Indonesia, Maxico, UK, Turkey etc.
So, we stand at the third position in facebook usage marathon. We may not be able to manage more than one Gold medal in Olympics but we have very well achieved the 3rd position here. A bronze medal from mark zuckerberg!!.
How facebook can be harmful
Many people may find this an unimportant discussion but I personally feel that this is the time when we should think about how facebook can be harmful. After facebook has penetrated so deep into our society, we cannot ignore it of not being a social force. Nowadays internet is much more accessible to everyone than ever before.
Not only the desktop or laptop computers, but also the mobile phones have also become compatible to facebook accessibility. Decreased tariff rates from Network service providers have also fuelled to it. Matching steps with the current trend, many mobile companies have come up with cell phone models with built in facebook app etc. Some do have a dedicated facebook button!!.
Of course, level of internet accessibility is a very good thing and it speaks about our technological advancement and overall social development. But at the same time it brings with it addictions like facebook.
How facebook can be harmful ?
As such, facebook cannot be straightaway earmarked as a bad thing. The idea behind the creation of facebook was very noble. It was created to provide a platform to peoples to do online what they socially do in real-time(This is what shown in the movie : The social network).
But nowadays it is seen that facebook has converted into the most addictive online activity which performs very well at making people unsocial by compelling them to stick to the computer all the time.
Few weeks back one of my good friend had breakup with his girlfriend. My friend changed his facebook
password and refused to share with her, which they used to share earlier. His girlfriend had a suspicion that he is having some relation with some other girl. When he refused to share his password, she straightaway accused him of his relationship and also accused him that he used to send messages to that girl through facebook and that’s why he is not willing to share his password. Then my friend gave her the password and told him to open his account in front of him and see whether there was any message from any such girl. Astonishingly there wasn’t any such message. After few days I heard the news of their breakup.
On the day of their breakup the last words from my friend’s girlfriend ; “We should have solved the problem just by deleting our facebook profiles”.
My friend’s reply to that; “facebook can never change what we are, from our deep within. Your suspicion towards me of being with some other girl was not created by facebook. It was already there. Facebook had just brought it to light.”
Now you may feel why I have made you read this story. This is because I personally feel that there’s something wrong in the way we are letting facebook mess up with our personal life. I mean, C’mon now wake up you all facebook addicts …. What the hell facebook is ? just a website … just a online crap !! …. I don’t know why we should take facebook so seriously. Why should we let facebook be a part of our personal life ? nowadays engagement, breakup marriage .. nothing is officially accepted unless it is publicized through facebook!!.
I do have a facebook account. If you view my profile you will see lot of activities. Sharing, liking, status update, photo update, comment posting etc. etc. But I don’t think myself as a facebook addict. I login every day. Not much. Just for five to ten minutes. That too, if I get some leisure time. Not at the cost of my valuable time.
Too much of anything is bad. Moderate use of most of the thing is good. It’s time to introspect whether we are using facebook, or facebook is using us as its marketing campaign viewers. It’s really the high time to understand that facebook can be harmful.
